Love

Sometimes all you need is a change

This summer my family and I made the decision to relocate.  We left the beautiful weather of Sacramento and headed for the blistering Texas heat of San Antonio, where the salsa is so hot it knocks your boots off!  I had been feeling more and more trapped living in Sacramento despite having a non-profit that I loved, loads of wonderful friends, the supportive in-laws, and many successes.  The thing weighing me down--I could not escape the oppression of my ex-husband or the oppression of the family courts who were more and more the ones in control of my life, or so it seemed.

Step-Father's Day

Yesterday Jason and I celebrated our 3 year anniversary.  We have been engaged for a little less than a year, now; and he has had MANY opportunities to step into a father role with my daughters.  In fact, they are "our" daughters, because he has completely fallen for them in the best of ways!  Jason volunteers at the girls' schools, helps with homework, coaches them on the proper way to wash dishes, and enjoys teaching them the fine art of StarWars watching.

My Mother's Day Wish

Dear Children,
Jennifer and her daughters Francesca (left) and Alexandra (right) in 2005
Tomorrow is Mother's Day, and I know you have something up your sleeve for me; but let me take this opportunity to tell you what I TRULY want to celebrate tomorrow.

I want to kiss the top of your head and smell your hair because it reminds me of when you were a baby cuddled in my arms. You might be taller than me now, and I can't reach your head without a step-ladder, so please bend down when you hug me.

I want to see your smiling face as you share your hopes and dreams with me--they are so much more than I imagined possible, and if anyone can do it, you can!

The Colour Of A Woman's Heart

Hello Dear Readers!

This song has no lyrics, so the power of the music shines through without getting clogged up in our thoughts.  Tiana Andreas is a gifted composer and piano player.  When the girls were about 6 and 8 we had the opportunity to see Tiana perform live in Roseville.  Alexandra began to tear up during one of her songs, and had her first emotional reaction to music.  After the performance, Alex wanted to meet Tiana, and I shared Alex’s reaction with her.  Tiana gave her a copy of her CD, and it is a family favorite!

Blessed

Hello Dear Readers!

Martina McBride has such a powerful and strong voice; and many of her songs talk about overcoming abusive relationships.  “Blessed” is a song about appreciating the joys in life, no matter how big or small.  I remember playing this song for my daughters when they were feeling blue, and it quickly became a family favorite.

My favorite lines:
"I get to hear my children laughing down the hall through the bedroom door" because there is no greater joy for me, than to hear the happy noises of my children.

I'll Stand By You

Hello readers!

Today I am posting The Pretenders song "I'll Stand By You" in honor of our dog's 4th birthday!  Allie is 45 lbs of warm fuzzies and marshmallow fluff.  When she looks at me with her sad puppy eyes I can't help but sing the first line of this song "Oh, why you look so sad?" at her...followed by the rest of the song, of course.

It is important to honor Allie's place in our family as a loyal companion.  She gravitates towards people who are feeling ill or sad in order to comfort them, and it is so good for us humans to pet warm fuzzy things.

All You Need is Love

Hello Readers!

Happy Birthday to my dear friend Katherine!  "All You Need is Love" is one of her favorite songs, and I happen to think it is a great personal theme, as well!  And the Beatles are an iconic musical group, so how could I go wrong with this song?

My favorite lines:
"Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you in time" because learning to be yourself sounds like it would be the easiest task in the world, but I think it might be one of the most difficult.

Ice Cream

Hello Readers!

Sorry I'm a day late with this post; but it's a good one, so I hope you can forgive me!

Sarah McLachlan has been one of my favorite musicians since I was in high school.  "Ice Cream" is from her Fumbling Towards Ecstasy album.  When the Girly-Qs were about 2 and 4 we were listening to this song in the car and I told them that I loved them more than ice cream.  Quickly this turned into a game of one-upping each other with comments like "I love you more than cartoons!

No One

Hello Readers!

Alicia Keys is an amazing musician with a beautiful voice.

My favorite lines:
"People keep talking, they can say what they like, but all I know is everything's going to be alright" because other people should not dictate what we know in our own hearts to be true.  Conviction in our own thoughts and feelings is a source of strength.

"When the rain is pouring down, and my heart is hurting, you will always be around" because we should all enjoy a support system in our lives that includes people who love us unconditionally.
