Superman (It's Not Easy)

Hello Dear Readers,
Today I want to share Five For Fighting's song "Superman (It's Not Easy)" because they are performing at a benefit concert tonight atBaylor University'sFerrell Center in Waco, TX.  The concert is free, and it will benefit the residents of West, Texas as they deal with the aftermath of an explosion at a fertilizer plant from earlier in the week.
Baylor University is just a few miles south of West, and several alumni, faculty, and students live in West.

Hello Dear Readers!

Natalie Merchant is simply beautiful. Her appearance, her clothes, her voice—are understated and natural, and beautiful. I really enjoy her song “Wonder” because it helps me to imagine what it would truly be like to be famous and subjected to the opinions of so many others, including people who really have no idea who you are at the core. It also helps me to understand how strong a celebrity’s personal boundaries must be so that they can be tough enough to keep out unwanted influences.

Journey To The Past

Hello Dear Readers!

I sang this song in college at the end of the year party for the Residence Hall staff.
Some of my friends were graduating and this really summed up some of the feelings about returning to their hometown or beginning new in another state.

Aaliyah was such a talented vocalist, and she would have gone on to do great things if she hadn’t passed away in that plane crash.  “Journey To The Past” is also from the cartoon movie “Anastasia” and is one of the girls’ favorites!

My favorite lines:

Tiptoe Through The Tulips

Hello Dear Readers!

This one is for fun!  Tiny Tim, the eccentric ukulele player famous for marrying Miss Vicki on the Johnny Carson show, would not stand a chance at fame in today’s society because of his image—but he is HILARIOUS!  How he keeps a straight face during his performance is beyond me!  How many interesting entertainers never make it to the spotlight because of the “need” to be perfect.  I love Tiny Tim for just being himself!

An interesting fact: Miss Vicki is my mom’s second cousin!

Bring on the Rain

Hello Dear Readers!

Sometimes I have the opportunity to participate in a candlelight vigil to honor the children and families who are going through difficult times.  This is the song I sing after lighting the candles, and it becomes a very powerful message.  Jo Dee Messina sings this with Tim McGraw, and it is the perfect song to listen to after a bad day when you need get back on the proverbial horse.

My favorite lines:
"A single battle lost, but not the war" because we can’t always have things our way 100% of the time.

The Colour Of A Woman's Heart

Hello Dear Readers!

This song has no lyrics, so the power of the music shines through without getting clogged up in our thoughts.  Tiana Andreas is a gifted composer and piano player.  When the girls were about 6 and 8 we had the opportunity to see Tiana perform live in Roseville.  Alexandra began to tear up during one of her songs, and had her first emotional reaction to music.  After the performance, Alex wanted to meet Tiana, and I shared Alex’s reaction with her.  Tiana gave her a copy of her CD, and it is a family favorite!

Hello Dear Readers!

Martina McBride has such a powerful and strong voice; and many of her songs talk about overcoming abusive relationships.  “Blessed” is a song about appreciating the joys in life, no matter how big or small.  I remember playing this song for my daughters when they were feeling blue, and it quickly became a family favorite.

My favorite lines:
"I get to hear my children laughing down the hall through the bedroom door" because there is no greater joy for me, than to hear the happy noises of my children.

Jar of Hearts

Hello Dear Readers!

As a survivor of domestic violence, I really appreciate this song.  Anyone can become involved in an unhealthy relationship, but that doesn't mean that person is stuck there. Christina Perri's "Jar of Hearts" demonstrates how a person can extract himself or herself from a bad relationship and reinforce those personal boundaries to keep that negativity from creeping back.

This song and video may appear to be negative at first glance; but I choose to see it as a positive song because it shows the beginning of growth.

Just Around The Riverbend

Hello Dear Readers!

Just in case you didn't know, I LOVE musicals!  Disney's Pocahontas has some great music, and Judy Kuhn (singing voice for Pocahontas) has a beautiful singing voice.  The song "Just Around The Riverbend" really resonates with me because I am always looking for the next great adventure.  I enjoy the journey and the people I am with in the present; but I am always ready to find that next level of growth.

My favorite lines:
"What I love most about rivers is you can't step in the same river twice; the water's always changing, always flowing" because life changes.

Free Your Mind (in honor of MLK Day!)

Hello Dear Readers!

I picked "Free Your Mind" by En Vogue because it is a song with a strong message about prejudices and racism...with a positive and empowering spirit instead of an angry spirit.  I also love songs by strong women!  MLK Jr would be proud of these women!

My favorite lines:
"Before you can read me you gotta learn how to see me" because it is important to try to see people for their actions and ideas instead of their outward appearance...and that is SO hard to do!
