NFL Players Behaving Badly: The Martin/Incognito Bullying Situation

So here are the facts as I understand them.  I'm sure more facts will come out as the situation unfolds, but I'm going to evaluate the situation based on these four facts:

1) Jonathan Martin walked out on NFL's Miami Dolphins because Richie Incognito bullied him.

2) Richie Incognito was suspended from the Miami Dolphins to allow for a full investigation.

3) Richie Incognito sent abusive, threatening and racist messages to Jonathan Martin last spring.

4) Miami Dolphin leadership encouraged Richie Incognito to "toughen up" Jonathan Martin.

Teachable Moments

There are so many examples in today's society of how people let their emotions get out of control, and the consequences of impulsive acting out.  We were able to see that firsthand this week at the Sac State vs. Idaho State men's basketball game.

I took the girls and one of my friends to see the game, and we had great seats right behind the scorekeeper's table.  Alex is trying out for the 5th grade basketball team next week, so she was really paying attention to the rules and what the refs were calling out.

Words will never hurt me--or will they?

The hippocampus is the area in the brain where a great deal of learning occurs. (National Geographic, Stanford 2008)  Bruce McEwan and Robert Sapolsky studied the result of chronic stress on the neurons in the hippocampus in a group of rats. (National Geographic, Stanford 2008)  In their study, the neurons of the chronically stressed rats were significantly smaller and with fewer dendrite branches than the neurons of the normal rats.

Do you think the problem of bullying is too big for one person to handle?  Here is a true story from right here in our own backyard, where the actions of one student may have saved lives.

My Stand

Dear Readers,

Yes, I know I already posted a song for today...but I missed January 1 and 2, so I have some catching up to do!

During my work with Franny's House I had the opportunity to get to know some of the members of the band Cupla, and we were even interviewed together on theMichele Jennae Showonwww.HotMix106.comabout the very important topic of bullying.

"My Stand" is not only a fantastic song, it has an extremely powerful video and a great message.  Instead of bullying back against negative forces, it encourages us to combat bullying with healthier coping strategies.
