Standing Outside the Fire

Hello Readers!

This week in Alex's band class they had to perform solos in front of the rest of the class.  Alex is an amazing baritone player, but she is not a fan of playing in front of non-family members.  She did really well in class (of course!) and her band teacher asked her to perform at Sacramento State University for a solo competition.  Alex was not sure she wanted to do this--she was letting her stage fright get the best of her.  I remembered my own 7th grade experience singing a solo in choir, and then having to go compete at the solo and ensemble competition, as well.  I remember thinking I was a terrible singer and feeling mortified to have to sing in front of another person who was judging me.  I shared my experiences with Alex, and I also told her that today singing is something that I find great joy in.  I wonder if I would have found that joy if I bailed out of that first contest because I let fear get the best of me?  She decided to go to the competition!

Garth Brooks's "Standing Outside the Fire" reminds me to take a chance and live a little so that I can find joy.  You might also be interested in this related blog post about a little girl who overcame some of her physical obstacles with the help of a group of positive 5th and 6th graders!

My favorite lines:
"But you've got to be tough when consumed by desire, 'cause it's not enough just to stand outside the fire" because being passionate about something is motivation to pursue that dream no matter what challenges may stand in the way.

"Life is not tried, it is merely survived if you're standing outside the fire" because some of life's greatest moments come from the highest hurdles.  I am not content to be complacent--I want to spread my wings, light the world on fire, leap without looking, and have a life full of experiences and joys, even if it costs me a few bumps along the way.

Hope you were inspired!
<3,
Jen

Lyrics

We call them cool
Those hearts that have no scars to show
The ones that never do let go
And risk the tables being turned

We call them fools
Who have to dance within the flame
Who chance the sorrow and the shame
That always comes with getting burned

But you've got to be tough when consumed by desire
'Cause it's not enough just to stand outside the fire

We call them strong
Those who can face this world alone
Who seem to get by on their own
Those who will never take the fall

We call them weak
Who are unable to resist
The slightest chance love might exist
And for that forsake it all

They're so hell-bent on giving ,walking a wire
Convinced it's not living if you stand outside the fire

Standing outside the fire
Standing outside the fire
Life is not tried, it is merely survived
If you're standing outside the fire

There's this love that is burning
Deep in my soul
Constantly yearning to get out of control
Wanting to fly higher and higher
I can't abide
Standing outside the fire

Standing outside the fire
Standing outside the fire
Life is not tried, it is merely survived
If you're standing outside the fire
Standing outside the fire
Standing outside the fire
Life is not tried, it is merely survived
If you're standing outside the fire
